Some of my absolute favorite sessions are the ones where I get to photograph families year after year. There’s something so special about watching kids grow, seeing family dynamics evolve, and documenting those little changes that happen between sessions. This New Smyrna Beach family session at golden hour was exactly that kind of magic.
I’ve been photographing this family of four for a few years now, and this time, they brought Grandma and Grandpa along for their sunset session. Can I just say—multi-generational photos at the beach during golden hour? Chef’s kiss. The soft, glowing light, the wide New Smyrna Beach shoreline, and three generations laughing together? Yeah, it doesn’t get much better than that.

ToggleIf you’ve never experienced a New Smyrna Beach family session at golden hour, you’re missing out. That hour before sunset when the light turns warm and dreamy? It’s literally the best time for beach photography. The harsh midday sun is gone, the colors are gorgeous, and everyone looks amazing in that soft, flattering glow.
New Smyrna Beach is perfect for golden hour sessions because the beaches face east—which means sunset light wraps around beautifully without the sun directly in anyone’s eyes. The wide shoreline gives us plenty of space to move around, and during this time of day, the beach is peaceful and quiet. No crowds, no distractions—just your family and that incredible light.

This session was basically 45 minutes of pure fun. The kids ran from the waves, played in the sand, and absolutely cracked up their grandparents. We captured those classic posed family photos (because yes, you need at least a few where everyone’s actually looking at the camera), but honestly? The best images came from the in-between moments.
Grandpa chasing the little ones down the beach. Mom and Grandma walking together with their arms linked. The kids burying Dad’s feet in the sand. Those candid, genuine moments that show what your family actually FEELS like—that’s what golden hour sessions at New Smyrna Beach are all about.

Photographing the same families year after year is genuinely one of the best parts of my job. I get to see the kids grow (seriously, weren’t you JUST toddlers?!), notice the little personality changes, and document those fleeting stages that go by way too fast.
This family’s oldest went from a shy kindergartener in our first session to a confident, goofy kid who made everyone laugh during this shoot. The youngest, who spent most of our last session clinging to Mom, was running wild and free on the beach this time. And getting to include Grandma and Grandpa? That made it even more meaningful.
These are the images they’ll look back on in 20 years and treasure—not just because everyone looks great (they do!), but because they capture this specific moment in their family’s story.

If you’re thinking about scheduling your own New Smyrna Beach family session at golden hour, here’s what you need to know: timing is everything. Golden hour is that sweet spot about an hour before sunset, and the exact time changes throughout the year. I always give you specific arrival times based on when we’re shooting so you get that perfect light.
New Smyrna Beach locations like Smyrna Dunes Park, Flagler Avenue Beach, or the quieter mid-beach access points all work beautifully for golden hour sessions. We’ll choose the perfect spot based on your family’s size, vibe, and whether you want more natural dunes or easier beach access (especially important if grandparents are joining!).
And here’s my honest recommendation: if you have the flexibility, golden hour beats midday sessions every single time. The light is better, the beach is calmer, and your photos will have that dreamy, timeless quality that makes beach portraits so special.

Whether this is your first session with me or you’re a returning family (I love you guys!), I’d be honored to photograph your crew at New Smyrna Beach during that magical golden hour light.
