Family photoshoots, although fun, are often stressful. With kids both young and old, it can feel like a chore to obtain the simplest of photographs, or even a smile. Keep reading for 5 tips for surviving a family photoshoot!
Especially important when you have younger kids, is planning ahead. Don’t wait until the last minute to pick out and iron everyone’s outfits. Do this the week before and hang each outfit up with labels. This includes any shoes and accessories that you are considering. Get everything ready ahead of time so that you won’t be flustered come the day of. If you are it will show in the photographs!
Snacks are a must-have when it comes to kids! For one, they’ll probably get fussy mid-shoot. Snacks and a drink are the perfect way to give them a break, and of course keep them hydrated. Although tempting, avoid using snacks as a reward for smiling. It can actually do the opposite of what you want with young kids, because suddenly you aren’t giving them exactly what they want, fast or often enough. Keep the snacks hidden unless the photographer requests that you bring out a treat or two for encouragement.
*Side note! Only bring snacks that are non-messy. Anything that may stain clothing or hands, like ice cream or fruit, are a no-go. Instead, bring some pretzels.
When it comes to clothing and props, its best to keep it simple. Don’t go overboard with accessories, especially on kids. Lots of people like to place oversized headbands on their young daughters. Unless you know that they won’t touch or pull on it, try to avoid these. Same applies to jewelry. It can actually turn into a toy that they won’t let go of, leading to their arms or hands being in front of their face. When it comes to props, less will make it easier on everyone involved. Pick a small handful of items that are easy to carry. Otherwise you will end up lugging things to and fro, probably frustrated and a little sweaty.
It seems obvious, but it is so important that you arrive to the location of your shoot on time. This will not only make it easier on your photographer, as far as obtaining the photographs you want, but you as well. By showing up late and having less time for photographs, you will feel rushed. This can really put a damper on the overall experience and the memories you will make. Play it safe and arrive 15-20 minutes early, just in case!
In the words of Queen Elsa, “Let it Go”. Use this as your mantra during your family photoshoot. Plenty of things will go the opposite of the way you want. For one, you’ll have to throw posing out the window if you have younger kids. They’ll do what they want and its best to just roll with it. that’s why Lifestyle Photography is so awesome! Another common scenario I encounter are tears and tantrums. They’ll blow over, no need to fret! Even if your child refuses to smile, you will get some great portraits. Trust me on this one, just let it go!
